Appropriate Paper Technology

ZACD members at work on the paper chairs

Paper chairs are made by the use of appropriate paper technology (APT), a simple but efficient method using local and recycled materials to create a solid and stable chair. By using knowledge, creativity and specific measurements, the simple technique converts used paper scraps into a strong and colourful device for children with disabilities. The most common made projects are Paper chairs for an appropriate sitting position and standing frames to develop a child’s muscles for upright standing and possibility to walk.

The products built are essential for a childs’ correct development. A chair can help a toddlers’ correct upright sitting position when they are still too small for a wheelchair. Whereas a standing frame can help develop the appropriate leg muscles and straighten the legs to help a child with their upright standing position as well as the possibility to walk.

ATP, is a cost and time efficient method which has its roots in Africa (Zimbabwe), and has grown a lot in countries throughout the continent.

We are currently working together with the ZACD (Zambian Association for Children with Disability) to develop a database of information in regard to the physical and social effect of the paper chair on households in Zambia.

Further we have had contacts with another organisation in Asia which would want to employ the following technique. We are thus looking at the possibility to sponsor the trip for a member of the ZACD to travel to Asia to share the knowledge and building technique of the ATP.
